Online Innovation/ Crowdsourcing

The generation of radically creative ideas, the building blocks of radical innovation, might be considered the sine qua non of corporate success in many industries. Currently, organizations rely heavily on internal groups to generate radical innovation, based on the assumption that groups posses more diverse information resources than individuals. However, proponents of Open Innovation have lately highlighted the importance of information resources outside the organizational boundaries and their potential as a source of radical innovation. Online communities for innovation (‘crowdsourcing’), an important upcoming form of Open Innovation, are beginning to become an important platform in which groups form to (collaboratively) develop radically creative ideas.

Consequently, key issues for organizations are:

  • How can we enhance our innovative performance by using online communities for innovation to generate radically creative ideas?
  • How do these online communities for innovation ‘work’ as a setting for collaborative groups?
